4 days kayaking & super jeep safari in the highlands
Starting from Reykjavik City in a specially modified super jeep we drive up to the last untouched wilderness in Europe, the Icelandic Highlands. This huge deserted expanse is in every way conceivable magnificent, providing views and vistas that will stay with you for years to come. We drive up through Þjórsárdalur valley and stop at Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve. There we will go for a short hike in one of Iceland most famous highland areas before bathing in the hot springs. From Landmannalaugar we continue on highland tracks to the Langisjór highland lake. We camp out at the southwestern end of the beautiful lake which is framed in by sharp mountains and closed of by the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull glacier. This spot is certainly one of the most breathtaking camping spots in Iceland.
The following two days we paddle along the sheer Fögrufjöll Mountains and in towards the Vatnajökull glacier. The water in Langisjór used to be a milky color but when Skaftáriver changed its course it became a crystal clear ribbon of water. The Lake is 20 km long and roughly 2 km wide and so remote that it was not discovered until the late 19th century. The view, the location, the glacier and the many islands on the lake make it one of the top kayaking spots in Europe. We will camp out on the shores of the lake and enjoy the peacefulness of the wilderness. On our last day we hike the Sveinstindur Mountain to get an unforgettable view of Vatnajökull glacier and the Fjallabak area with its green mountains and haunting horizon.
