This brand new teambuilding program is set up to give participants the experience of training for the elite Icelandic mountain & glacier rescue outfits.
In order to be a part of these Icelandic rescue squads participants have to undergo a grueling two-year training schedule and from every 10 that start only 4 will succeed. For those that make it it will take many more years to qualify for the elite first response mountain & glacier rescue squad, the Undanfarar.
During our day on the glacier the group will get a taste of just what it takes to travel safely in a glacier environment and how to keep your self and those around you safe. This includes instructions on how to wear and use crampons safely, how to wear and use body harnesses, ice screws, karabiners and rescue ropes in a glacier environment. Instructors will also go into detail about rope work, knots and outlet glacier crevasse rescue along with general search techniques and rescue protocol. All of this will take part on the mesmerizing Sólheimajökull outlet glacier, which is a vast moving glacier that descends from the Mýrdalsjökull glacier plateau only 150 km from Reykjavik City. On the way to the glacier you will pass the spectacular Skógafoss Waterfall and Þórsmörk valley is no far away. After a great day on the glacier we will unwind in the local swimming pool before cruising onwards.
Instructors during the course will all be active members of the “Undanfarar squads”, trained mountain guides with dozens of recues under their belt and numerous climbs and expeditions. Iceland’s finest mountaineers.
Participants have to bring very good outdoor clothing, good thermal layers, good woolen socks (bring spare socks), good hiking shoes with good ankle support, good waterproof jacket and pants, good gloves and a good hat. A more detailed list of items to bring can be supplied upon request.
