Alpine Iceland

Mountain hiking in Vatnajökull National Park
Difficulty: 4 out of 5 / demanding

The southern coast offers the most majestic peaks in Iceland. These are scattered along the edge of the Vatnajökull ice-cap, Europe´s largest glacier. Perhaps the most known and sought after of these is Hvannadalshnúkur, Icelands highest peak.

This trip however focuses on its surrounding peaks, the often forgotten slightly smaller brothers and sisters. These ascents offer a true Icelandic mountaineering experience of solitude and serenity, away from the crowds and off the beaten path. Scaling peaks seldom climbed by others, aside from the few locals that make their way to these summits, is a unique opportunity. It offers the essence of what mountaineering is all about, good company, amazing views and no crowds. There are many peaks to choose from and they vary in difficulty. But they all share these two things; they are almost impossible to pronounce and they offer magnificent views over the surrounding landscape in all directions. To the north is the expansive Vatnajokull icecap and to the south lies the North Atlantic ocean, curving on the horizon as far as the eye can see. It is a truly magnificent sight, inspiring appreciation for the saying “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey”.

We arrange guided hikes to Hrútfjallstindar, Þverártindsegg, Sveinstindur and all the other classics in this area upon request.
